Why I love Interactive Designers

No offense to my print designer friends (and really, some of my best friends are print designers, I swear!), I’ve lately been thinking about how much I love Interactive designers. And production folks. And developers. Maybe it’s because many people seem to think that a designer is a designer is a designer and the result of this way of thinking is working with clients who, for whatever reason, want the person who designs their offline materials to also create their web site. “You guys can work with so-and-so, right? He’ll do the design and you guys can produce it.”

Sure. Sure, we can. But, the thing is, the web is a unique medium. Compared to print, we have far less control over things like fonts, or colors, or even alignment. I can’t tell you how many times in the past couple of years (or even months) I’ve had to explain to a print designer that the pretty, perfectly-sized boxes they laid out are going to get jacked all to hell as soon as the client starts putting content of different lengths in each one. Or how many times I’ve gotten a web site design where everything is Flash and/or images because the designer wants to make sure that they control every aspect of the experience.

The reason why Interactive people are MY people, why I love them with a burning passion matched only by my love of IKEA meatballs and Gossip Girl, is that they are supremely flexible. They understand that what they lovingly create in Photoshop will vary slightly when it’s produced, and when it’s viewed by me on my Mac or their mom on a PC. They create designs that can handle those variations. They are accustomed to constantly reviewing and revisiting their design in production and tweaking it to optimize both the display, and the end user experience.

Print designers*, on the other hand, tense up at the thought that the headlines and body copy can’t all be [insert obscure font name here], or that my Grandma could increase the size of the body copy WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION. So, when they are directing the creation of a web site, tension is created between the well-controlled viewpoint of a print designer (who is used to having the ability to tightly control font, layout, color and overall presentation) and the chaos-theory viewpoint of a web production team, who knows that they must plan for a variety of viewing situations that range from cinema screens to Blackberries, PCs to Macs, and browsers, browsers, everywhere!

But while it may make a print designer feel good to control the user experience, and while that may be a perfectly reasonable way to think about a print (or even television) experience — that level of attempted control makes for a very poor user experience online. It can make the site harder to find on search engines. It makes it impossible for someone to resize the font for readability. It can make access by disabled users difficult or impossible. In short, it can succeed at looking good and fail at being usable. A controlled experience is great in print, but it doesn’t translate well to the online world.

As I said, no disrespect to my print designer friends. But please, let my people go.

*I’m generalizing here, and I know it. I know there are a few designers out there savvy enough to design well for both print and online media. But, they are few and far between. So for the same reason you wouldn’t ask your kickass web designer to create a billboard for you, stop asking your kickass print designer to create your web site. A good print designer and a good web designer can — and should — work together under an overall creative direction and produce the best representation of that creative direction in their respective medium.

I guess I’m one of the few copywriters (along with Brain Traffic) that get the whole “web copy is different” thing. (In spite of the fact that I’m usually the only person with gray hair at the web design meetings).

It’s not just the need for flexibility with the web design crew. It’s also the fact that sentences must be simpler and shorter, paragraphs must be simpler and shorter, and you really need to know what formats the copy will be avaiable in before you start writing. And don’t get me started on the whole “compromise” requirements for SEO and other online marketing methods.

It’s the way of the beast. Deal with it or stick to “old school” marketing mediums.

  10. Meghan Wilker Says:

Bob — first of all, thanks for commenting even after slogging through the Gossip Girl comment spam on this post.

And thanks also for pointing out that “getting it” in this medium has nothing to do with how much (or how little) gray hair one might have. I’ve met my fair share of young hipster designers who can’t deal with the Wild West of Interactive.

  12. Payday Loan Advocate Says:

It’s always great to see shows being produced in an effort to bring underrepresented cultures or things into the limelight; as long as it constitutes a fair and balanced portrayal of the subject matter at hand. October 5, 2008, the CW Network premiered a new drama from the creators of The Sopranos. The new show, called Easy Money, is said to be about a family who owns and operates a “high-interest loan” business called Prestige Payday Loans. However, by taking one look at the trailers for the new drama, as well as a few of the episode synopsis, my biggest fear is that the premise for the show is based solely on vicious media stereotypes. With this in mind, think of the last time that you viewed a news story either online or on television news talking about the payday loan industry. Chances are the story you saw or read wove tales of “real” persons’ woes fueled by their getting bogged down in an “endless cycle of debt.” Worst of all, according to such “articles,” it all started when they needed to borrow money to fix their car or pick up the tab on another unexpected bill. Such stories are further proof that, for the sake of winning the ratings wars, news networks will latch on to and report only the juiciest, most scandalous aspects of any big story and completely ignore everything else. It seems as if the CW network is following suit in an effort to recover viewers lost during the Writer’s Strike. One, for instance, opens with the tag line, “for this family of loan sharks, money is easy.” Surely, it’ll be interesting to see whether or not the CW or the show’s creators learned what the industry is really about. Chances are, probably not.

  13. David Johnston Says:

The 2008 US Election is fast approaching, few more days we will now recognize the new President of our country for the next four years. In just one more week, we will find out who will be the next President that will represent our country. As the time nears, I am getting more excited and nervous by the second. The so-called “political polls” that have been smeared all over the nightly news broadcast and websites is not something I would put any stock into. Reputable news sources such as the Associated Press, NBC, CBS, ABC and Reuters, are said to be the backbone of these “official” polls. However, what they don’t tell you is that the poll which represents two-thirds of the people who support Barack Obama might be the cause of concern. This is not because of the fact that Obama intends to put an end to legitimate financial options such as cash advance stores. Rather, because two-thirds of what this poll is talking about only signifies two-thirds of their viewing audience, and does not represent the nation as a whole. So, read all the information about all of the candidates before you cast your vote; don’t allow the media to fool you.

Philadelphia Phillies have won their first World Series in 28 years. The last time they climbed to the top of the mountain (1980), Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose and Steve Carlton showed the American League the meaning of spirited, winning baseball. Today, as emotions run high and the city of Philadelphia gears up for celebration of their boys bringing home the Commissioner’s Trophy, pillars of the community like Temple University are preparing for mass rioting. According to Dean of Students Ainsley Carry, “Students involved in vandalism, refusal to disperse, destruction of property, etc. will face both criminal and University disciplinary action. Sanctions may range from fines up to and including immediate suspension. Surveillance – including videotaping – is heightened during the Series on campus and throughout the city.”
I’m all for personal responsibility, which includes showing respect for others and their property. But is the feel of a police state crackdown necessary? Wait, this is Philadelphia, the “City of Brotherly Love. Of course it is necessary.

I was always prepare for the things that is usually I think a big problem when it comes to Money talks. Yeah, it never occurred to me that there is someone who can help me about my problem especially in budgeting. Cash Advance could help me get through it especially now Winter months is coming. Then, after I had read the article linked to this post, I agree that winter is always pretty stressful for me. Not only do I have the usual bills and holiday expenses to worry about, I live in an area that gets tons of snow every year. Piles of snow mean dangerous driving conditions and freezing living conditions. I am a good budgeter, but if anything happens to me and/or my car this winter, my budget will be out the window. Speaking of my car, I need new snow tires, and I’m sure that will cost me a pretty penny. Plus, when it’s cold outside, I like it to be warm and toasty inside. Unfortunately, heating my apartment isn’t exactly cheap. I plan for all these costs ahead of time, but it’s good to know that I have a responsible option for covering unexpected costs. I’ll look into getting a cash advance this winter when the cold weather expenses take a toll on my budget.
